Path of Exile 2: Tips for Locating More Citadels

Apr 19,25

After completing the main campaign and the Cruel difficulty Acts 1 through 3, players of *Path of Exile 2* unlock the Endgame and gain access to the Atlas of Worlds. Within the Atlas map, adventurers will encounter various unique structures, each presenting distinct gameplay mechanics and challenges. These include the Realmgate, Lost Towers, the Burning Monolith, and the highly sought-after Citadels.

Citadels stand out as some of the most elusive objectives in the endgame. While Lost Towers are visible above the Fog of War, and the Realmgate and Burning Monolith spawn near the Atlas start point, Citadels can be harder to spot. However, with the upcoming 0.1.1 update, Citadels will become more visible from a distance. If you're struggling to locate them on your Atlas map, here are some tips to help you find more Citadels in *PoE 2*.

What Are Citadels For In PoE 2?

In *Path of Exile 2*, Citadels are special map nodes that come in three types: Iron, Copper, and Stone. Each Citadel hosts a unique Boss, which are enhanced versions of bosses from the *PoE 2* campaign, making them formidable endgame challenges. Defeating these bosses will reward you with a Crisis Fragment, which is crucial for unlocking the Burning Monolith, where you'll face the pinnacle boss, the Arbiter of Ash. This is essential for completing the "Pinnacle of Flame" quest, which you unlock upon entering the Burning Monolith map and examining the locked door.

  • Iron Citadel: Home to Count Geonor (Act 1 boss), it appears as a large city with black walls.
  • Copper Citadel: Jamanra, The Abomination (Act 2 boss), resides in a large encampment surrounding the map node.
  • Stone Citadel: Doryani (Act 3 boss) is found in a structure resembling a stone pyramid, similar to the ziggurats in Act 3.

To access a Citadel, players need to use a Waystone of at least Tier 15 to travel to its map node and activate it. Like other Maps, you have only one attempt to navigate the map and defeat the boss without dying. These areas are not only valuable for the Crisis Fragments but also offer the chance to obtain exceptional loot. Once completed, a Citadel cannot be re-run, so you'll need to continue exploring the Atlas to find another.

How To Find More Citadels In PoE 2

Path of Exile 2 Atlas Map

With the 0.1.1 update, *Path of Exile 2* Citadels will become more noticeable from a distance on the Atlas map. A large beacon of light will appear above their locations, visible even through the Fog of War, making it easier to navigate towards them.

If you don't see any Citadels nearby on your Atlas map, the best strategy to find more is to move in a straight line in one direction. This approach reveals the most Fog of War and expands your view of the Atlas map efficiently. Along your path, make sure to visit any Lost Towers you encounter, as completing these will clear a significant area of Fog around the tower, potentially revealing nearby Citadels.

Each type of Citadel tends to spawn in specific biomes:

  • Iron Citadels: Found in Grass or Forest biomes.
  • Copper Citadels: Typically appear in Desert biomes.
  • Stone Citadels: Often located along the coast of any biome.

If you're targeting a specific type of Citadel to gain access to the Burning Monolith, consider heading towards areas on your map that match the appropriate biome.

It's rare for multiple Citadels to appear on the same screen of the Atlas map when fully zoomed out, so after finding one, it's wise to travel in a completely different direction to locate another. With the 0.1.1 update, you should be able to see Citadel beacons within a few screens of your explored areas. If you still don't see any Citadels within the Fog of War after the update, continue to move in a straight line in one direction until you spot a beacon guiding you to your next challenge.
