PC Games That Play Better With A Controller

Feb 07,25

PC gaming is largely synonymous with keyboard and mouse control, particularly for genres like first-person shooters and strategy games that benefit from precise aiming and control. However, some PC games are surprisingly better suited to controllers. Reflex-based movement and fast-paced melee combat often lend themselves well to gamepad input. Similarly, genres originating on consoles and later ported to PC frequently maintain a controller-centric feel.

While many PC releases strive for robust keyboard and mouse support, certain titles truly shine with a controller. This is especially true for games prioritizing quick reflexes and intense melee action. Certain genres, particularly those with console origins, often feel more natural with gamepad controls.

The recent release of several high-profile titles in late 2024, including Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Infinity Nikki, Marvel Rivals, Path of Exile 2, and Delta Force, showcased excellent keyboard and mouse compatibility, often surpassing controller experiences. Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered, while playable with either, arguably benefits slightly more from gamepad use.

Several upcoming PC game releases (January 2025) are anticipated to offer superior controller experiences:

  • Freedom Wars Remastered: A PS Vita port following the Monster Hunter formula, suggesting natural controller integration.
  • Tales of Graces f Remastered: The Tales series consistently performs better with gamepads, and this remaster is expected to follow suit.
  • Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: The combat system closely mirrors its predecessor, which was better played with a controller on PC.
  • Marvel's Spider-Man 2: A PS5 port to PC, usually indicating a primary focus on controller support, although keyboard and mouse likely remain viable.

A 2024 Soulslike game has also been included in this list. See below for details.
