A Plea to Fans to Help Save Perfect Dark

Perfect Dark was among the titles axed in the wake of Microsoft's recent workforce reductions, prompting a response from Joanna Dark's voice actor, Alix Wilton Regan. She encouraged the community to voice their support if they wished to see the project revived. In a July 4th post on X (formerly Twitter), Regan mentioned receiving numerous inquiries about the possibility of another studio acquiring the rights to Perfect Dark.

She expressed her sentiment, "I HOPE WE LIVE IN A NICE WORLD." Regan is celebrated for roles such as the Female Inquisitor in Dragon Age: Inquisition, Aya in Assassin’s Creed: Origins, and Samantha Traynor in Mass Effect 3.

As news broke of the game's cancellation and the shutdown of developer The Initiative, Regan extended her sympathy to those impacted. In a July 3rd X post, she stated, "It’s been an honour to work with the talents at The Initiative. My heart hurts for everyone affected by today. But like Joanna, we will all rise again."

The Ever-Present Risk of Game Cancellations

Another actor involved in Perfect Dark shared his concerns about the project's termination and the lost work. Elias Toufexis took to X on July 4th to discuss the constant threat of cancellations in the industry and the financial uncertainty actors face when projects are abruptly halted.

Toufexis, whose role remains unspecified, is best known for portraying Adam Jensen in the Deus Ex series, Takkar in Far Cry Primal, and Sam Coe in Starfield. He remarked, "I had a good amount of days of acting in Perfect Dark that just got scrapped. Thousands of dollars that I expected and counted on gone in a snap ...now every game I do as director or actor I wake up hoping it isn’t canceled."

Some fans misinterpreted his post, believing the actors had not been paid for their work. Toufexis promptly clarified in a follow-up tweet: "No no. The days I worked they pay me. They have to. But when you’re working on a game they "hold" you for x amount of days each month. (so I can schedule work around other games and shows)"

He reflected on the financial impact of these "hold" days: "You can’t help but look at the holds and think about the $ that would have been made."

In an email to staff on July 3rd, Xbox CEO Phil Spencer framed these difficult decisions as necessary for the company's long-term health, part of a strategy to "make choices now for continued success in future years and a key part of that strategy is the discipline to prioritize the strongest opportunities." Despite the current setback, fans hold out hope that another studio may eventually revive the Perfect Dark project.
