Playstation Portal 2? New Sony Handheld Reportedly in the Works to Compete with the Switch

Sony is reportedly developing a new portable gaming console, marking a return to the handheld market. This ambitious project aims to expand Sony's reach and compete with industry giants Nintendo and Microsoft. Read on for details!
Sony's Return to Portable Gaming

According to a November 25th Bloomberg article, Sony is actively developing a new handheld console designed to allow players to enjoy PlayStation 5 games on the go. This strategic move reflects Sony's desire to broaden its market presence and challenge Nintendo's dominance in the handheld gaming sector, a position solidified since the Game Boy era and continued with the Nintendo Switch. Microsoft's own plans to enter this market further underscore the growing competition.
This new handheld is reportedly an evolution of the PlayStation Portal, released last year. While the Portal offered PS5 game streaming, its reception was mixed. A device capable of native PS5 game play would significantly enhance appeal and accessibility, especially considering recent PS5 price increases.
Sony's history with handheld consoles includes the popular PlayStation Portable (PSP) and the well-received PS Vita. Despite their success, neither could surpass Nintendo's market leadership. This new venture signifies a renewed commitment to the portable gaming market.
Sony has not yet officially confirmed these reports.
The Booming Mobile and Handheld Gaming Market

Modern lifestyles demand portable entertainment, fueling the growth of mobile gaming and its substantial contribution to industry revenue. Smartphones offer convenience and accessibility, but their limitations in handling demanding games create an opportunity for dedicated handheld consoles. Nintendo's Switch has successfully capitalized on this, and with Nintendo and Microsoft both actively pursuing this market segment (including a rumored Switch successor around 2025), Sony's entry is a logical response.
