Predicting the Switch 2 Launch Games

With the Nintendo Switch 2's release looming on the horizon, excitement is building about what games we might see at launch. While Nintendo hasn't revealed an official day one lineup, let's take a speculative look at what could be in store for us when the new console hits the shelves.

Mario Kart 9

It's been over a decade since Mario Kart 8 debuted on the Wii U, evolving into a definitive karting experience with its Deluxe edition on the Switch and numerous DLCs, bringing the track count to an impressive 96 circuits. As the best-selling game on both the Wii U and Switch, a new installment, Mario Kart 9, would undoubtedly be a hit. Although reported to be in development since 2022 with a "new twist," Nintendo hasn't officially confirmed it yet. We're eager to see what innovations this sequel brings and hope for a launch day release to make it a system seller.

New 3D Super Mario

Given the legacy of games like Super Mario 64 and Mario Galaxy, it's surprising the Switch only got one new 3D Mario game, Super Mario Odyssey, back in 2017. With no substantial DLC for Odyssey, fans have been eagerly awaiting a new 3D adventure. A launch title for the Switch 2 could be the perfect opportunity for a fresh Mario platformer, filled with innovative levels, unique abilities, and collectibles. While it might be ambitious to expect both a new Mario Kart and a 3D Mario game at launch, either one would be a bold statement of Nintendo's future plans.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond

Metroid fans have endured a long wait since the game's announcement at E3 2017. After a period of silence and a development shift from Bandai Namco to Retro Studios, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond finally resurfaced in 2024 with a gameplay reveal that hinted at its potential on the Switch 2. The smooth visuals in the trailer suggest that the Switch 2 could be the platform for its long-awaited release, ideally coinciding with the console's launch.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom Enhanced

Two of the Switch's most celebrated titles, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, are likely candidates for the Switch 2. With hopes of backward compatibility and a potential "boost" mode, we're also dreaming of enhanced versions that leverage the Switch 2's rumored power for a 4K Hyrule experience without frame rate issues.

Ring Fit Adventure 2

Nintendo often surprises with unique launch titles, as seen with the original Switch's lineup. Ring Fit Adventure, released later in the Switch's lifecycle, became a massive hit by blending an RPG with fitness. A sequel could showcase the Switch 2's new capabilities, offering fresh ways to engage with the console's motion controls and potentially other innovative features.

Resident Evil 4 Remake

Though the original Switch couldn't handle Capcom's Resident Evil 4 remake, the Switch 2 might just be powerful enough. Launching this critically acclaimed game at the console's debut would not only demonstrate its capabilities but also bring back a beloved title to Nintendo's platform, years after its GameCube origins.

Doom: The Dark Ages

While a bit of a long shot, the success of Doom and Doom Eternal on the Switch, coupled with Microsoft's openness to multi-platform releases, makes Doom: The Dark Ages a tantalizing possibility for the Switch 2. With limited information available beyond a teaser trailer, a launch date announcement at the upcoming Xbox Developer Direct could align with the Switch 2's debut.

The Haunted Chocolatier

Stardew Valley's impact on the Switch is undeniable, making the Switch 2 an ideal platform for ConcernedApe's next project, The Haunted Chocolatier. Despite slow updates and developer Eric Barone's recent admission of not working on it for a while, a launch year release seems plausible. A launch day appearance would sweeten the Switch 2's debut, offering a unique mix of simulation and action-RPG elements.

Earthblade

Lastly, Earthblade, the follow-up to the indie hit Celeste, could be a perfect fit for the Switch 2's launch. With its stunning pixel art and "2D explor-action" gameplay, and a tentative 2025 release window, it's not impossible to imagine it syncing with the new console's arrival.
