Project Zomboid: How to Board Up Windows

Jan 22,25

Securing your shelter in the zombie-infested world of Project Zomboid requires more than just finding a suitable location; it demands robust defenses. One of the most fundamental ways to protect your base is by barricading windows. This guide explains how to effectively board up your windows and keep the undead at bay.

How to Barricade Windows in Project Zomboid

To barricade a window, you'll need a wooden plank, a hammer, and four nails. Once you've gathered these essential supplies, simply right-click the window you wish to secure. Your character will automatically begin nailing the plank in place. Each window can support up to four planks for enhanced protection.

Finding the necessary materials is relatively straightforward. Hammers and nails are commonly found in toolboxes, garages, sheds, and closets. Wooden planks are most frequently located on construction sites, or can be salvaged by dismantling wooden furniture such as shelves and chairs in a pinch. Administrators can use the "/additem" command to spawn items directly.

Barricaded windows significantly hinder zombie access compared to unprotected windows. The more planks you install, the more time it will take for zombies to breach the defenses. To remove planks, right-click the boards and select "Remove." Note that you'll require a claw hammer or crowbar to do so.

Larger furniture items, such as bookshelves or refrigerators, are unfortunately ineffective as window barricades. Both zombies and players will simply pass through them. While these items are useless for defense, knowing how to move furniture remains a valuable skill for interior design purposes.

More robust barricades can be constructed using metal bars or sheets, but this requires a sufficient Metalworking skill level.
