PS5: Power-Down Stats Unveiled by PlayStation

Jan 23,25

Half of PlayStation 5 users bypass rest mode, opting for a complete system shutdown instead. This surprising statistic, revealed by Sony Interactive Entertainment's Cory Gasaway, prompted the development of the PS5's Welcome Hub. The Hub aims to create a unified user experience despite varied player preferences.

Gasaway, in an interview with Stephen Totilo, confirmed that a significant 50% of PS5 users in the US bypass the rest mode feature. This is noteworthy given rest mode's design to conserve energy while facilitating downloads and maintaining game progress. The feature, touted by Sony's Jim Ryan prior to the PS5 launch as environmentally conscious, is clearly not universally adopted.

As reported by IGN, Gasaway's comments were part of a larger discussion on the design of the 2024-introduced Welcome Hub. Developed during a PlayStation hackathon, the Hub directly addresses the 50/50 split in rest mode usage. For US users, the Hub defaults to the PS5 Explore page; international users see their most recently played game. This approach provides a more consistent starting point and a customizable interface.

The reasons behind rest mode avoidance remain diverse. While energy saving is a primary benefit, some users report internet connectivity issues when rest mode is enabled, leading them to keep their consoles fully powered on for downloads. Others experience no such problems. Regardless of the cause, Gasaway's insights highlight the complexities of user interface design and the importance of catering to a wide range of player habits.
