Virtua Fighter Returns: New In-Engine Footage Unveiled

Sega has treated fans to a fresh look at the upcoming Virtua Fighter game, marking the franchise's highly anticipated return after nearly two decades of relative silence. This new installment, a completely original entry, is being developed by Sega's own Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the team behind the acclaimed Yakuza series and the Virtua Fighter 5 remaster.

The recently released in-engine footage, first shown at NVIDIA's 2025 CES keynote, isn't actual gameplay but offers a compelling glimpse into the game's visual direction. The video showcases a stylized combat sequence featuring Akira, the franchise's iconic character, in new outfits, departing from his classic look. The visuals appear to blend elements of Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6, moving away from the series' earlier polygonal style towards a more realistic aesthetic. The impeccably choreographed fight sequence, while undeniably staged, hints at the potential for fluid and dynamic combat.

The last significant Virtua Fighter release was Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown, a 2021 remaster (coming to Steam in January 2025). This new game represents a substantial departure, promising a fresh experience for both longtime fans and newcomers. Sega's commitment to revitalizing the franchise is evident, with further glimpses of the game expected in the future. As Sega President and COO Shuji Utsumi declared in the VF Direct 2024 livestream, "Virtua Fighter is finally back!" The game's development, alongside Sega's Project Century, is currently underway at Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio. While details remain scarce, the combination of a talented development team and the exciting new footage suggests a promising future for the Virtua Fighter franchise.
