Sims 5 May Never Come as EA Hopes to Break from Sequel Model

Rumors of a Sims 5 sequel have persisted for years, but EA is dramatically shifting its strategy, abandoning the traditional numbered-release model for its iconic life simulation franchise. This article explores EA's ambitious plan to expand "The Sims Universe."
EA's Vision for "The Sims Universe"
The Sims 4: The Franchise's Foundation

For years, fans have anticipated the next numbered Sims installment. However, EA is charting a new course, moving away from the traditional sequel structure. Instead of Sims 5, the future involves continuous updates across four titles: The Sims 4, Project Rene, MySims, and The Sims FreePlay.
This departure from linear releases acknowledges the immense player investment in The Sims 4 over its decade-long run. EA's VP, Kate Gorman, explained to Variety that past Sims titles were viewed as replacements. The new approach avoids this, instead focusing on expanding the universe. This strategy promises more frequent updates, diverse gameplay, cross-media content, and a wider range of offerings.

Despite its age, The Sims 4 remains incredibly popular. EA reported over 1.2 billion hours of gameplay in 2024 alone. Concerns that a Sims 5 sequel would render The Sims 4 obsolete have been addressed; EA assures players of continued updates, bug fixes, and quality-of-life improvements. A dedicated team was even formed in May to tackle technical issues.
EA's entertainment and technology president, Laura Miele, reinforced this commitment, stating that The Sims 4 will be the foundation for future growth. Continued updates and engaging content are promised for years to come.

One key element of EA's expansion plan is Sims Creator Kits, enabling players to purchase community-created digital content. Gorman highlighted the community's crucial role in The Sims' success, emphasizing the company's commitment to fairly compensating creators. While specifics remain undisclosed, EA is working closely with creators to establish a fair compensation model.
The Sims 4 Creator Kits launch in November across all Sims platforms, alongside existing Kits.
Project Rene: A New Multiplayer Experience

Speculation about Sims 5 continues, but EA has unveiled Project Rene, a new project that's not a direct sequel but offers a compelling alternative.
Project Rene is described as a platform for players to connect and share experiences in a new world. A limited playtest is planned for this fall via The Sims Labs. This playtest will give players a first look at the game's multiplayer features, a significant departure from previous iterations.
Since its October 2022 teaser, Project Rene has had one closed playtest focusing on furniture customization.

Gorman acknowledged lessons learned from The Sims Online, highlighting the potential for social, real-time multiplayer within the Sims universe. Project Rene aims to deliver this experience while retaining core simulation elements.
EA is also celebrating its 25th anniversary in January 2025 with a "Behind The Sims" presentation, promising regular updates on the franchise's future.
The Sims Movie: A Cinematic Expansion

EA confirmed a film adaptation of The Sims, a collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios. Gorman stressed the film's grounding in the Sims universe. The goal is to create a cultural phenomenon, similar to the Barbie movie, resonating with both existing and new audiences.
Margot Robbie's LuckyChap is producing, with Kate Herron (Loki, The Last of Us) directing and co-writing. The film will reportedly include significant lore and easter eggs, including references to iconic Sims elements.
