Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 Steam Deck Review (in Progress) – GOTY Contender, but Play It Elsewhere for Now
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2: A Deep Dive Review – Steam Deck and PS5 Impressions
For years, anticipation has built for Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2. While I wasn't initially aware of the first game, my exploration of the Warhammer 40,000 universe through titles like Total War: Warhammer, Boltgun, and Rogue Trader piqued my interest. After a captivating reveal, I eagerly dove into Space Marine 2, spending roughly 22 hours across my Steam Deck and PS5, leveraging cross-progression and online play. This review is ongoing due to the need for comprehensive cross-platform multiplayer testing and pending official Steam Deck support (expected by year's end).
My Steam Deck experience, utilizing Proton GE 9-9 and Proton Experimental, revealed both positive and negative aspects. The game's stunning visuals and visceral combat shine through, regardless of platform.
Gameplay is a standout. The blend of brutal melee and satisfying ranged combat is expertly executed. While some may prefer ranged attacks, the close-quarters combat is incredibly immersive and rewarding. The campaign is enjoyable solo or with friends in co-op, though defense missions feel less engaging. Playing with a friend overseas highlighted the game's polished co-op experience, reminiscent of classic Xbox 360 co-op shooters.
The game's visual fidelity is breathtaking, particularly on PS5 in 4K mode (tested on a 1440p monitor). Environments are richly detailed, enemy swarms are impressive, and the lighting and textures are superb. Character voice acting and customization options further enhance the experience. The included photo mode offers extensive customization options, though some effects may appear less polished on Steam Deck with FSR 2 and lower resolutions. The PS5 version, however, boasts a phenomenal photo mode.
Audio is equally impressive. While the music is good, it's the voice acting and sound design that truly elevate the experience.
PC Features:
The PC port boasts extensive graphical options, including display mode, resolution, render resolution, quality presets (Balanced, Performance, Ultra Performance), upscaling (TAA, FSR 2), dynamic resolution, v-sync, and various quality settings. DLSS and FSR 2 support are present at launch, with FSR 3 planned for later. Full controller support, including adaptive trigger support for DualSense controllers (even wirelessly!), is a welcome addition. Keyboard and mouse controls are also fully functional.
Steam Deck Performance:
While technically playable on Steam Deck without configuration changes, performance is currently suboptimal. Even at low settings and 1280x800 with FSR 2.0, maintaining a stable 30fps is challenging, with frequent drops into the 20s. Dynamic upscaling helps, but frame rate inconsistencies remain. Occasional game crashes upon exiting also need addressing.
Multiplayer:
Online multiplayer functions flawlessly on Steam Deck, with successful cross-platform co-op testing. Further testing with random players and the PvP mode (Eternal War) is pending.
PS5 Impressions:
The PS5 version performs well in Performance mode, though a locked 60fps isn't achieved, and dynamic resolution is apparent. Fast load times and PS5 Activity Card support are significant advantages. Gyro controls are currently absent.
Cross-Save Progression:
Cross-save functionality between Steam and PS5 is currently implemented, with a two-day cooldown period between platform syncs.
Future Improvements:
Post-launch updates should prioritize improved Steam Deck performance, HDR support, and haptic feedback on PS5.
Conclusion:
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is a strong contender for Game of the Year. The gameplay is exceptional, and the visuals and audio are top-notch. While the PS5 version is highly recommended, the Steam Deck experience needs optimization before a full recommendation can be given. This review will be updated with a final score and further multiplayer impressions post-launch.
