Ancient Legends Unveil in Bunraku's 'Kunitsu-Gami' Prelude
Capcom's new action strategy game, Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess, launched July 19th, and to celebrate, they commissioned a unique Bunraku puppet theater performance. This collaboration showcases both the game and Japan's rich cultural heritage to a global audience.
Capcom's Bunraku Celebration: A Fusion of Tradition and Technology
Showcasing Kunitsu-Gami's Cultural Roots Through Traditional Arts
The National Bunraku Theater of Osaka, celebrating its 40th anniversary, created a special Bunraku performance as a prequel to the game. This ancient art form, featuring large puppets manipulated to a samisen soundtrack, perfectly complements the game's deep Japanese folklore inspiration. Custom puppets representing Soh and the Maiden, Kunitsu-Gami's protagonists, were crafted for the show, titled "Ceremony of the Deity: The Maiden's Destiny," masterfully brought to life by puppeteer Kanjuro Kiritake.
Kiritake commented on the collaboration, highlighting the shared Osaka roots of both Capcom and Bunraku, expressing a desire to share this art form with the world.
A Modern Twist on an Ancient Art: Bunraku Meets CG
Capcom describes this production as a "new form of Bunraku," blending traditional puppetry with cutting-edge computer-generated (CG) backdrops from the game world itself. This innovative approach successfully bridges the gap between ancient art and modern gaming.
Capcom's press release emphasized their goal of introducing the captivating world of Bunraku to a global audience, using the game's launch as a platform to highlight its Japanese cultural influences.
Kunitsu-Gami's Deep Bunraku Inspiration
Producer Tairoku Nozoe revealed in an Xbox interview that game director Shuichi Kawata's passion for Bunraku significantly influenced Kunitsu-Gami's development. The game's design, even before the collaboration, already incorporated many Bunraku elements, particularly in character movement and direction. The shared experience of attending a Bunraku performance solidified their decision to partner with the National Bunraku Theater.
Set on the defiled Mount Kafuku, Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess challenges players to purify villages and protect the Maiden using sacred masks. The game launched July 19th on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox consoles, also available on Xbox Game Pass. A free demo is available on all platforms.
