Fallout Developers Express Enthusiasm for a New Entry, But Creative Freedom is Key

Several key figures in the Fallout franchise, including director Josh Sawyer, have voiced their willingness to contribute to a new Fallout game. However, a crucial condition has been highlighted: the opportunity to explore fresh creative avenues.

The Need for Novelty

In a recent YouTube Q&A, Sawyer emphasized the importance of creative freedom. He stated his eagerness to work on another Fallout title, but only if it allows for significant innovation. The constraints of a project heavily influence his decision, as he explained, "Any project hinges on 'what are we doing, what are the boundaries, what am I allowed to do and not allowed to do?'" He further clarified that restrictive limitations would make the project unappealing, as the core desire is to explore uncharted territory.

This sentiment is echoed by other Fallout developers. Last year, Fallout co-creators Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky expressed interest in a Fallout: New Vegas remaster, but only if it provided an opportunity for creative reinvention. Cain emphasized the importance of novelty in his past RPG projects, stating, "Every RPG I've ever made offered me something new and different...If someone came to me and said, 'You want to make a Fallout game?' My answer is 'Well, what's new?'"

Obsidian's Perspective

Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart also expressed a desire to work on another Fallout game, but acknowledged that no such project is currently underway. In an interview with Game Pressure in January of last year, he confirmed that Obsidian's immediate focus remains on Avowed, Grounded, and Outer Worlds 2. While he expressed a personal hope to contribute to another Fallout game before retirement, he emphasized the uncertainty surrounding the timing of such a project.

The collective desire among these developers highlights a potential future for the Fallout franchise, but underscores the critical need for a project that allows for substantial creative innovation and departure from established formulas.
