Starfield 2 Release Probably Years Away, But Promised to be “One Hell of a Game”
Starfield 2: A Promising Sequel, But Years Away
Starfield's 2023 release has already sparked anticipation for a sequel. While Bethesda remains tight-lipped, former lead designer Bruce Nesmith offers a promising outlook. He confidently predicts Starfield 2 will be "one hell of a game," leveraging lessons learned from the first installment and building upon its existing foundation.
Nesmith, a veteran of Bethesda titles like Skyrim and Oblivion, highlights the advantages of sequel development, drawing parallels to the iterative improvements seen in those franchises. He suggests Starfield's initial challenges, stemming from building new systems and technology from scratch, will be mitigated in the sequel. He anticipates Starfield 2 will address player feedback and incorporate significant enhancements.
"I’m looking forward to Starfield 2," Nesmith stated in a recent interview. "It’s going to be one hell of a game because it’s going to address a lot of the things people are saying...It will be able to take what’s in there right now and put in a lot of new stuff and fix a lot of those problems." He further compared the potential of Starfield 2 to franchises like Mass Effect and Assassin's Creed, which refined their initial concepts across multiple entries.
However, a Starfield 2 release remains distant. Bethesda's commitment to annual story expansions for Starfield, coupled with the lengthy development cycles of The Elder Scrolls VI and Fallout 5, suggests a considerable wait. Considering The Elder Scrolls VI's projected five-year development timeline, a Starfield 2 release might not occur until the mid-2030s.
Bethesda's Todd Howard emphasizes the studio's dedication to quality over speed, prioritizing the creation of "meaningful moments" for fans. This deliberate approach, while extending wait times, promises a refined and impactful gaming experience.
While Starfield 2 remains speculative, Bethesda's commitment to the franchise is evident through the ongoing development of DLC, such as the recently released Shattered Space. This ongoing support offers fans something to look forward to while patiently anticipating the eventual arrival of Starfield's highly anticipated sequel.
