Disney Un veils Imminent Park Transformation

Dec 25,24

Disneyland and Walt Disney World are overhauling their Genie+ ride reservation system, starting July 24th. The updated system, rebranded as "Lightning Lane Multi Pass," allows guests to book reservations ahead of their park arrival, addressing a major source of guest frustration.

The current Genie+, introduced in 2021 as a paid replacement for the complimentary FastPass system, lets guests manage reservations via a mobile app and purchase Lightning Lane access for expedited rides. However, its same-day booking requirement drew criticism.

The changes, announced on the Disney Parks Blog, include:

  • Name Change: Genie+ becomes "Lightning Lane Multi Pass," with individual Lightning Lane reservations now "Lightning Lane Single Pass."
  • Advanced Booking: Guests staying at Disney resorts can book up to seven days prior to arrival; other guests can book up to three days in advance.
  • Increased Reservations: Guests will be able to make more Lightning Lane reservations than currently allowed. Note that these changes primarily affect Walt Disney World; Disneyland will only see the name change, retaining the existing booking process.
  • Virtual Queue Remains: The existing Virtual Queue system (used for attractions like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and TRON Lightcycle / Run) will continue unchanged.

This revamp combines elements of Genie+ and the former FastPass+ system, aiming to simplify vacation planning. All current Genie+ attractions will be included in the Lightning Lane Multi Pass system, along with the new Tiana's Bayou Adventure (opening June 28th at Disney World).

Disney's response to guest feedback is evident in the pre-arrival booking option. With summer festivals, discounted tickets, and new attractions, the advanced booking capability could significantly benefit guests this summer. However, the long-term success of these changes remains to be seen.
