PlayStation Unveils Smash-Style First-Party Title

PlayStation's new studio, a recent acquisition from Bungie, is reportedly developing a MOBA codenamed "Gummy Bears." This project, initially conceived at Bungie, has undergone a significant shift, moving to a new team within PlayStation's first-party development structure.

Initially reported in August 2023 as a Bungie project, Gummy Bears' development timeline is shrouded in some mystery. While it's been in development since at least 2022, its release date remains uncertain. The transition to a new PlayStation studio, comprised of approximately 40 former Bungie employees, followed Bungie's 2024 workforce reduction and subsequent integration with Sony.

A key differentiating factor is Gummy Bears' unique game mechanics. Unlike typical MOBAs, it reportedly eschews traditional health bars in favor of a percentage-based damage system, drawing inspiration from the Super Smash Bros. franchise. High percentage damage results in characters being knocked off the map, mirroring the Smash Bros. mechanic.

The game will feature the standard MOBA character classes: Attack, Defense, and Support, along with multiple game modes. Its visual style is described as "cozy, vibrant, and lo-fi," a stark contrast to Bungie's previous, grittier titles. This stylistic choice aims to attract a younger player base than Bungie's established audience.

While the exact development stage remains undisclosed, the project's shift to a new PlayStation studio in Los Angeles suggests a continued commitment to its development, although a release date remains far from confirmed.
