Elden Ring Nightreign Ditching Popular FromSoftware Feature

Jan 08,25

Elden Ring: Nightreign will omit the in-game messaging system, a hallmark of FromSoftware titles. This decision, confirmed by director Junya Ishizaki in a January 3rd interview with IGN Japan, is attributed to the game's anticipated shorter play sessions (around 40 minutes). The fast-paced, multiplayer focus of Nightreign wouldn't allow sufficient time for reading and writing messages, according to Ishizaki.

Despite this omission, Nightreign will retain and enhance other asynchronous features from Elden Ring. The bloodstain mechanic, for example, will be significantly improved, enabling players to observe and even loot the ghosts of fallen opponents.

FromSoftware aims for a more intense and streamlined experience in Nightreign. This vision, reflected in the game's three-day structure, is described as a "compressed RPG" with high variety and minimal downtime.

The game, revealed at TGA 2024, is slated for a 2025 release, though a precise date remains unannounced.
