GTA Online Could Remain Active Post-GTA 6 Release

Take-Two's Continued Support Hinges on Player Interest

Many fans question GTA Online's fate following GTA 6's debut. While Rockstar hasn't confirmed definitive plans, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick offered insights during a February 14, 2025 interview with IGN.

While avoiding specific project details, Zelnick explained Take-Two's philosophy: "Speaking theoretically—since I won't discuss unannounced projects—we continue supporting franchises where players remain actively engaged."

Zelnick cited NBA 2K Online's continued operation in China despite its sequel's 2017 launch: "We maintained Online 1 because both versions retained substantial player bases. This demonstrates our willingness to sustain legacy titles with active communities."

Given this precedent, Rockstar may continue GTA Online alongside GTA 6 if substantial demand persists. The decade-old multiplayer component remains highly profitable, making abrupt discontinuation unlikely given its sustained success.

GTA 6 Online May Feature User-Generated Content Platform

Reports from Digiday on February 17, 2025 suggest Rockstar is developing a UGC-driven online platform for GTA 6, mirroring Roblox and Fortnite's models.

"Rockstar has reportedly engaged top creators from Roblox, Fortnite, and GTA communities about developing custom experiences," Digiday notes. This UGC system would enable environmental modifications and personalized content creation.

Beyond expanding GTA 6's reach through creator content, this approach could generate additional revenue via virtual item sales and partnership programs. Rockstar hasn't officially commented on these reports.

Despite its age, GTA 5 remains Twitch's third most-watched game. Incorporating modders and creators into GTA 6 Online could significantly amplify its visibility across platforms.
