Jacksepticeye's Unannounced Soma Animated Show Collapses Unexpectedly
YouTuber Jacksepticeye, whose real name is Seán William McLoughlin, recently shared a disheartening update with his fans in a video titled 'A Bad Month.' In it, he revealed that he had spent an entire year working on an animated show based on the survival horror science fiction game, Soma, only for the project to fall apart unexpectedly, leaving him "quite upset."
Soma, developed by Frictional Games—the minds behind the Amnesia series—launched in 2015 and was critically acclaimed for its compelling narrative. Jacksepticeye, a known fan of the game, streamed it extensively upon its release and often cites it as one of his top video games of all time. His passion for Soma led him to collaborate with its developers for over a year on the animated show project.
In the video, Jacksepticeye expressed his excitement for the project, mentioning that the team was ready to move into full production. However, an unnamed party suddenly decided to take the project in a "different direction," causing the entire endeavor to collapse. He refrained from sharing specifics due to his frustration and disappointment with how things unfolded.
The cancellation of the Soma animated show has significantly impacted Jacksepticeye's plans for 2025. He had envisioned dedicating much of his year to the project, reducing his usual content uploads to focus on this creative venture. The abrupt end left him questioning his priorities and struggling to find a new direction.
Following Soma, Frictional Games released two more titles in the Amnesia series: Amnesia: Rebirth in 2020 and Amnesia: The Bunker in 2023. In a statement from July 2023, Frictional's creative director Thomas Grip announced the company's intention to explore themes beyond horror, aiming to focus on other emotional qualities in their games. This shift aligns with their goal of providing immersive experiences that evoke a variety of emotions, not just fear.
