Lies of P Eases Up After Difficulty Backlash
Lies of P's upcoming DLC, Overture, will introduce difficulty options for the very first time.
As a "Soulslike" game, Lies of P delivers a challenging experience, which may prove daunting for newcomers drawn to its grim narrative and atmosphere. Initially, Director Jiwon Choi maintained that Soulslike games shouldn't include difficulty options, resulting in the base game launching without such features.
Neowiz has now reversed this stance after carefully considering player feedback.
"We wanted to make the game accessible to a wider audience," Choi explained to VGC. "After reviewing extensive player and developer feedback, we implemented difficulty options to accommodate different play styles. This adjustment helps more players experience what we've created."
The announcement has sparked debate among players regarding the director's change of heart. One commenter observed: "It's easier to maintain purist ideals until negative reviews accumulate and accessibility concerns dominate discussions about your game."
"As someone who started gaming in my mid-20s, I appreciate easier difficulty settings," shared another player. "I love Lies of P but lack decades of gaming experience. Accessibility options let me enjoy quality games that would otherwise be too demanding."
"Some Souls veterans oppose difficulty options because they value prestige over accessibility," added a forum participant. "I'm glad Lies of P prioritizes inclusion over elitism."
However, not all reactions have been positive. Steam forums and social media reveal divided opinions:
"Lost interest after seeing all the nerfs and difficulty options. Stop dumbing down games," criticized one player, though most replies in the thread supported the developer's decision.
Another lamented: "Neowiz had a potential masterpiece but compromised its integrity." A thread titled "Difficulty settings = Dealbreaker" appears alongside one where a player complains about the "excessive difficulty" of the current experience.

Lies of P offers a dark reimagining of Pinocchio's tale, featuring a unique morality system where player choices impact gameplay. The Overture DLC expands this world with new areas, adversaries, characters, and weaponry. It introduces Death March mode, allowing players to re-challenge all bosses. Completion typically requires 15-20 hours for veterans after reaching a specific story chapter. Neowiz has already confirmed development of a full sequel.
In our 8/10 review, we praised Lies of P as "an exceptionally well-executed soulslike that stays true to genre fundamentals while introducing innovative mechanics."
