Bethesda Clarifies: No Remake Planned for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Bethesda Game Studios has provided clarity on its recent release, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, explaining why the project is classified as a remaster rather than a remake. In a detailed message posted on X/Twitter, the studio emphasized its intent to preserve the original experience while enhancing it with modern technology.
“We never wanted to remake it – but remaster it – where the original game was there as you remember playing it, but seen through today’s technology,” Bethesda stated.
The distinction is important to the team. While Oblivion Remastered introduces sweeping visual upgrades and key gameplay improvements—such as the long-requested ability to sprint and a refined level-up system that blends mechanics from both Oblivion and Skyrim—the core design and structure remain rooted in the 2006 classic.
Fans diving into the remastered edition have noted the sheer volume of changes, from reimagined environmental details like sewer grates to more impactful gameplay adjustments. Despite these extensive updates, Bethesda maintains that the essence of the game has been intentionally left untouched.
“We looked at every part and carefully upgraded it,” the studio continued. “But most of all, we never wanted to change the core. It’s still a game from a previous era and should feel like one.”
Bethesda expressed gratitude to both longtime fans and newcomers, hoping that the remaster offers a fresh yet familiar journey through Cyrodiil. “Our hope with this remaster is, that no matter who you are, when you step out of the Imperial sewer – you feel like you’re experiencing it for the first time.”
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is now available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, and is also included in Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. The release is supported by a comprehensive suite of resources, including an Interactive Map, complete Walkthroughs for the Main Questline and all Guild Quests, guides on building the perfect character, and tips for what to do first in the game.
