Joanna Novak, the historical consultant for Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, recently shared her experiences and the challenges she faced while working on both installments of the series. She discussed the compromises that were necessary to create an engaging narrative while still aiming for historical authenticity.

Novak pointed out that the game's storyline, which focuses on the protagonist Hendrich, deviates significantly from what life would have been like for a blacksmith's son during that historical period.

She emphasized that the narrative leans more towards legend and folklore than historical truth, rating the plot at a mere "1 out of 10 on the realism scale." Novak explained that the developers chose this direction because players are more drawn to epic, rags-to-riches tales where the protagonist rises through the ranks, interacts with historical figures, and achieves greatness, rather than experiencing the often mundane life of a peasant.

Regarding the world-building and environment in Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Warhorse Studios strived for authenticity but encountered limitations due to time, budget constraints, and the need to cater to modern player expectations. Some historical accuracies were adjusted to enhance gameplay and enjoyment.

Despite these compromises, Novak expressed satisfaction with the inclusion of numerous period-appropriate details. However, she cautioned against labeling the game as realistic or historically accurate, as such descriptions could be misleading.
