Kojima Eyes Film Directing After Finishing PlayStation Game Physint in 5-6 Years
Hideo Kojima's eagerly anticipated spiritual successor to Metal Gear, Physint, is slated to be another five to six years away from release. This timeline was shared by Kojima himself during a conversation with Le Film Francais, where he also expressed his long-held desire to direct a movie, which he plans to pursue after completing his current projects.
Since his high-profile departure from Konami in 2015, Kojima has been inundated with offers to develop games under his independent studio. As translated by ResetEra user Red Kong XIX, Kojima stated, "Besides Death Stranding 2, there's also Physint in development. That will take me another five or six years." He further added, "But maybe after that, I could finally decide to take on a film. I grew up with cinema. Directing would be, in a way, a tribute to it. Also, I'm getting older, and I'd prefer to do it while I'm still young!"
PlayStation Studios head Herman Hulst announced Physint in January 2024, though details have been scarce since. Initially, Kojima hinted that Physint would also be a movie, but he later clarified on X/Twitter that it would represent a new level of "Digital Entertainment" akin to a cinematic experience.
Kojima Productions is juggling multiple projects, including Death Stranding 2 and the new IP OD, a collaboration with Xbox Game Studios featuring actress Hunter Schafer and filmmaker Jordan Peele. Additionally, Kojima is involved in A24's film adaptation of the original Death Stranding.
Death Stranding 2: On The Beach is set to launch on June 26, and its lead actor, Norman Reedus, recently hinted in an IGN interview that he would reprise his role in the upcoming film adaptation.
In other news, Kojima recently shared a range of discarded video game concepts, including a 'Forgetting Game' where the protagonist loses crucial information and skills if the player takes extended breaks. He also revealed leaving a USB stick filled with game ideas for his staff to explore after his passing.
