Possible Revival of Scalebound Development?

Apr 03,25

Scalebound was once heralded as one of the most ambitious action projects of its time, blending dynamic combat, immersive music, and a novel interaction system with a massive dragon companion. This title became one of the few Xbox One exclusives that captured widespread attention yet never saw the light of day. Announced in 2014, the project's development was officially stopped by Microsoft in 2017.

Recently, the official Clovers Inc account on X shared a video featuring Hideki Kamiya and his team revisiting archived gameplay footage of Scalebound. In the video, Kamiya reminisced about the game's development process with fondness and pride, despite its cancellation. Kamiya then amplified the video's reach by retweeting it with a direct and compelling message to Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft's gaming division: "Come on, Phil, let's do this!". This plea underscores Kamiya's ongoing interest in potentially reviving the game. He has previously expressed a similar sentiment in early 2022, indicating his willingness to negotiate with Microsoft about resuming the project.

The conversation around Scalebound's revival has been persistent, with rumors intensifying in early 2023. Speculation about a potential reboot circulated, although Microsoft remained silent on the matter. In an interview with the Japanese publication Game Watch, when asked about Scalebound, Phil Spencer simply smiled and stated, "I have nothing to add at this time".

Even if Microsoft were to express interest in reviving Scalebound, a swift return of the game is unlikely. Currently, Hideki Kamiya is engaged with developing a new installment of Okami at Clovers Inc. Should Xbox decide to greenlight the project, Kamiya would only be able to commence work on Scalebound after finishing his current commitments. However, the enduring interest in Scalebound offers a glimmer of hope that one day, gamers might finally experience this long-awaited title.
