Sony Unveils teamLFG: New PlayStation Studio from Bungie, Crafting Team-Based Action Game Blending Fighting, MOBA, and 'Frog-Type' Elements

Sony has announced the formation of a new PlayStation studio named teamLFG, along with a teaser for its debut game. In a recent post on the PlayStation Blog, Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment's Studio Business Group, revealed that teamLFG was originally part of Bungie, the developer behind Destiny and Marathon. The studio is currently working on an ambitious incubation project that has sparked excitement within the industry.

The name teamLFG derives from the online gaming term 'Looking For Group,' emphasizing the studio's focus on social gaming. Their first game is described as a team-based action game, drawing inspiration from a diverse range of genres including fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and even "frog-type games." Set in a lighthearted, comedic world within a new mythic, science-fantasy universe, the game aims to create an environment where players can find friendship, community, and belonging.

teamLFG is driven by a mission to foster meaningful player interactions. They envision a gaming experience where players log in to find their friends already online, recognize familiar names, and create memorable moments that become the stuff of legends within their community. The studio emphasizes the importance of player feedback, planning to involve the community through early access playtests and maintaining agility to respond to suggestions not only before launch but throughout the game's live service phase.

This incubation project was spun out of Bungie following significant layoffs last year. After Sony's acquisition, Bungie struggled with financial targets as Destiny 2's performance declined, leading to layoffs affecting approximately 100 employees in November 2023, followed by another 220 in 2024. During these transitions, 155 employees were integrated into other parts of Sony Interactive Entertainment, and the incubation project was officially announced.

Amid these changes, a former Bungie lawyer praised Sony's involvement in improving Destiny 2. Recently, Bungie fully unveiled the extraction shooter Marathon and outlined the future roadmap for Destiny 2, while confirming no plans for a Destiny 3 or a spinoff project called Payback.
