Square Enix Shields Staff From Online Harassment

Mar 14,25

Square Enix has implemented a comprehensive anti-harassment policy to safeguard its employees and partners. This policy clearly defines unacceptable behavior, encompassing threats of violence, defamation, and other forms of harassment. The company reserves the right to suspend services and pursue legal action against individuals engaging in such conduct.

Given the rise of online harassment within the gaming industry, Square Enix's proactive stance is a significant step. High-profile incidents, such as death threats against actors and the cancellation of events due to threats, highlight the urgent need for such policies. This policy extends protection to all Square Enix employees and partners, from support staff to executives.

The policy specifically outlines various forms of harassment, including but not limited to: threats of violence, defamation, business obstruction, trespassing, persistent unwanted contact, discriminatory behavior, privacy violations, and sexual harassment. It differentiates between acceptable feedback and unacceptable harassment, clarifying the boundaries of appropriate customer interaction.

In response to harassment, Square Enix will take decisive action, potentially including service suspension and, in cases of malicious intent, legal action or involvement of law enforcement.

Square Enix Anti-Harassment Policy

Harassment:

  • Acts of violence or violent behavior
  • Abusive language, intimidation, coercion, duress, excessive pursuit, or reprimand
  • Defamation/slander, denial of personality, personal attacks (including email, contact forms, online comments or posts), threats of wrongdoing, or threats of business obstruction
  • Persistent inquiries or repeated visits
  • Trespassing on company property
  • Unlawful restraint, including via phone calls or online inquiries
  • Discriminatory speech or conduct based on race, ethnicity, religion, family origin, occupation, etc.
  • Infringement of privacy through unauthorized photography or video recording
  • Sexual harassment or stalking

Undue Demands:

  • Unreasonable requests for product changes, exchanges, or monetary compensation
  • Unreasonable demands for apologies (especially those specifying employee or partner positions)
  • Excessive requests for products or services beyond socially acceptable norms
  • Unreasonable and excessive demands for employee punishment

The necessity of such a policy is underscored by past incidents targeting game developers, including voice actors and other industry professionals. Recent examples include the harassment of voice actors, and previous threats against Square Enix staff, some leading to arrests. The cancellation of events due to threats further emphasizes the importance of proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of all involved in the gaming industry.
