Following a successful launch, Avowed has met the sales expectations of both Microsoft and Obsidian. In an interview with Bloomberg on February 22, 2025, Avowed Game Director Carrie Patel expressed enthusiasm about the future of the franchise. While no official plans have been announced, Patel's interest in directing more games within this universe is clear. She stated, "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it."

Changes in Avowed During Development

The development journey of Avowed was fraught with challenges and pivots. Patel described the process as "messy," but ultimately rewarding. The project, which began in 2018, saw Obsidian navigating the complexities of independence before being acquired by Microsoft and announcing the game in 2020. Significant changes included dropping multiplayer features and rebooting the project in January 2021 under new leadership.

With Patel leading the charge, the team faced the challenge of managing over 80 people. She explained, "Normally if you’re stepping back and reevaluating your creative direction, putting together a new vertical slice and revised production plans, you would do that with a very small team." Under her direction, the focus shifted towards enhancing the story and lore from the Pillars of Eternity franchise, and moving from an open world to open zones, which allowed for richer, more detailed environments.

Patel reflected on the chaotic yet transformative nature of development, noting, "There’s this interesting thing I’ve seen on every project I’ve worked on or seen during my time at the studio — things are messy, messy, messy, then they start coming together."

Obsidian Wants Pillars of Eternity Tactics

With Avowed breathing new life into the Pillars of Eternity universe, Obsidian is exploring new avenues for the franchise. During a Twitch Livestream on February 23, 2025, Josh Sawyer, director of Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, shared the studio's interest in developing a tactics game titled Pillars: Tactics. Sawyer highlighted the widespread interest among the team, saying, "Pillars: Tactics is a thing that a lot of people would like, a lot of people at the studio would like to work on; there are a lot of people who like tactics games."

However, he also acknowledged the challenges in defining the project's scope, including team size, visual quality, and overall scale. While there has been interest in a tactics game for some time, Avowed's success has reignited these discussions.

Despite this, Sawyer remains committed to the idea of a third Pillars of Eternity game, but with a significantly larger budget akin to that of Baldur’s Gate 3, which stands at $100 million—a stark contrast to the budget for Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire.
