Civilization 7 has received predominantly negative feedback on Steam from players testing the game's advanced access version. Here's a breakdown of the issues players are reporting.

Civ 7 Receives Mostly Negative Rating During Early Access Launch

Steam Players Voice Concerns About Interface, Maps, and Resource Systems

Civilization 7 Advanced Access Feedback

Civilization 7 (Civ 7) launched its Advanced Access five days before its February 11 release date, but Steam users paying extra for early gameplay have expressed dissatisfaction, resulting in "mostly negative" Steam reviews.

The highly anticipated sequel – the first new entry since Civilization 6 in 2016 – currently suffers from this poor reception, with numerous players citing similar concerns.

Civilization 7 UI Complaints

Player complaints primarily focus on the game's User Interface (UI), describing it as "clunky" and "visually unappealing" compared to Civ 6. Some reviews liken the UI to "a low-budget mobile Civ clone," while others suspect Firaxis Games designed the interface primarily for console play, resulting in limited PC options.

Additional criticism targets the game's mapping system, including difficulty with map selection, limited type variety, restricted sizing options, and minimal customization features. Players note the interface provides inadequate information about different map types during selection.

Notably, Civ 7 offers just three map sizes (Small, Medium, Large) compared to Civ 6's five scalable options that accommodated diverse gameplay styles.

Civilization 7 Resource System Changes

The revised resource mechanics also drew criticism. Civ 7 implements strategic resource allocation to cities/empires rather than Civ 6's tile-based collection system. Many players argue the previous random tile distribution created better replay value.

Firaxis Games responded to feedback: "We're reviewing all UI feedback and continuing to improve Civilization VII. Our maps will evolve through future updates and expansions – we appreciate and welcome player suggestions."
