Xbox and Nintendo Spurred the Two Scariest Moments of Former PlayStation Exec Shuhei Yoshida's Career

Shuhei Yoshida, the former president of Worldwide Studios for Sony Interactive Entertainment, recently shared insights into some of the most challenging moments he faced during his tenure at PlayStation. In a candid interview with MinnMax, Yoshida highlighted two significant events orchestrated by competitors that he found particularly daunting.

The first of these moments was the launch of the Xbox 360, which preceded the PlayStation 3 by a year. Yoshida described this as "very, very scary," noting that it put pressure on PlayStation fans who were considering waiting for Sony's next console, as they would be missing out on the new generation of gaming experiences.

However, the event that Yoshida described as "the biggest shock" from a competitor was Nintendo's announcement that Monster Hunter 4 would be exclusive to the Nintendo 3DS. This came as a major surprise because Monster Hunter had been a massive success on the PlayStation Portable (PSP), with two exclusive titles. The news was compounded by Nintendo's decision to cut the price of the 3DS by $100, making it significantly cheaper than the PlayStation Vita, which was priced similarly at launch.

Yoshida recounted his reaction to the news, saying, "After launch, both Nintendo 3DS and Vita were $250 but they dropped $100. I was like, 'Oh my god'. And [then they] announced the biggest game... The biggest game on PSP was Monster Hunter. And that game is going to come out on Nintendo 3DS exclusively. I was like, 'Oh no.' That was the biggest shock."

Monster Hunter 4 launched exclusively on the Nintendo 3DS in 2013. Ultimate launched a year later.

Yoshida, who retired in January after over three decades with Sony, has since been able to share such previously undisclosed insights. His departure from the company has also allowed him to voice his thoughts on other topics, including his reservations about Sony's push towards live service games and his perspective on why a remake or sequel to the cult classic Bloodborne is unlikely.

These revelations not only provide a glimpse into the competitive dynamics of the gaming industry but also highlight Yoshida's significant contributions to PlayStation, where he became a beloved figure among fans worldwide.
