Sony Targets Bloodborne 60fps Patch Creator with DMCA Notice

The developer behind the widely discussed Bloodborne 60fps patch revealed receiving a DMCA takedown notice from Sony.

Renowned modder Lance McDonald shared the update via tweet, stating Sony Interactive Entertainment requested removal of links to the patch he shared online, which he has now complied with.

McDonald referenced a YouTube video on his Bloodborne 60fps patch, released in 2021, and recalled a conversation with former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida, where he mentioned creating the 60fps mod for Bloodborne.

“I met @yosp and told him, ‘I create mods for PlayStation titles,’ and he responded, ‘oh!’ I added, ‘I developed the 60fps mod for Bloodborne,’ and he burst out laughing.”

Bloodborne remains a perplexing case in gaming. The FromSoftware classic, a critical and commercial hit on PS4, has seen no updates from Sony. Fans eagerly await an official next-gen patch to boost the game from 30fps to 60fps, alongside hopes for a remaster or sequel.

This leaves modders like McDonald to fill the void. Recently, fans leveraged PS4 emulators to achieve a near-remastered experience on PC. Digital Foundry highlighted a “breakthrough in PS4 emulation” with ShadPS4, enabling Bloodborne to run fully at 60fps. Could this development have prompted Sony’s firm response? IGN has reached out to Sony for comment.

Earlier this month, Yoshida shared his thoughts on Bloodborne’s absence in an interview with Kinda Funny Games:

“Bloodborne is constantly the top request,” Yoshida noted. “People wonder why we haven’t updated or remastered it. It seems straightforward, right? The company does plenty of remasters, so some are frustrated.

“I have a personal theory, having left first-party. I recall Miyazaki-san deeply cherishing Bloodborne, his creation. I believe he’s interested but incredibly busy and successful, so he can’t work on it himself and prefers no one else does either. The PlayStation team respects his wishes. That’s my take, not insider knowledge.”

Nearly a decade after its release, Bloodborne lies untouched. Is there hope? Miyazaki often sidesteps Bloodborne questions, noting FromSoftware doesn’t own the IP. Yet, last February, he acknowledged the game would thrive on modern hardware.
