EA Enforces In-Office Work Policy, Phases Out Remote Roles

Electronic Arts has informed its workforce that it will permanently end remote work arrangements, mandating a full return to office-based work.

In an email to staff reviewed by IGN, CEO Andrew Wilson emphasized that in-person collaboration fosters "a dynamic energy that sparks creativity, drives innovation, and strengthens team bonds, often leading to breakthroughs that enhance player experiences." He outlined that "hybrid work" now requires employees to work from their local office at least three days per week, with "offsite local roles" being gradually eliminated.

In a follow-up email from EA Entertainment president Laura Miele, also seen by IGN, she elaborated on the shift to "a globally consistent, enterprise-wide work model" from a previously decentralized approach:

These changes will not be immediate. Employees should follow current directives from their Business Unit until further notice, regardless of location.Work model transitions will include at least a 12-week notice period before implementation. Timing will vary by location and will be communicated locally with ample notice.Hybrid work entails working from your local office at least three days per week, as outlined in Andrew’s EA Action.A new 30-mile/48-km radius policy around EA locations has been introduced. What this means:Employees within 30 miles/48 km of an EA office will adopt the Hybrid work model.Employees beyond the 30-mile/48-km radius will be classified as remote unless their role is designated as On-Site or Hybrid. The Offsite Local work model will be phased out, with transitions taking 3 to 24 months depending on location.Exceptions to the work model and future remote hires will require approval from a CEO Direct or myself.

Multiple anonymous EA sources told IGN that employees are frustrated and uncertain, with some facing long commutes or challenges related to childcare and medical needs previously accommodated by remote work. Those classified as remote and living beyond the 30-mile radius expressed concerns about their job security if unwilling or unable to relocate closer to an office. Two sources noted that, per Miele’s email, existing remote workers’ exemptions from office attendance will be discontinued within 3 to 24 months.

Remote work has been a staple in the gaming industry, particularly since the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, when stay-at-home orders prompted major companies to embrace remote work as a long-term solution. In recent years, companies have increasingly hired remote workers, and some near-office employees relocated to more affordable areas, believing remote work was permanent.

However, several major gaming companies have recently mandated office returns, sparking frustration and, in some cases, employee turnover as workers faced difficult choices between relocation and job retention. Companies like Rockstar Games, Ubisoft, and Activision Blizzard have faced backlash for similar policies. Despite this, the trend toward in-office mandates continues, with EA now joining the shift to require office-based work.

EA recently cut approximately 300 jobs across the company, following earlier layoffs at BioWare this year and the elimination of about 670 positions last year.

IGN has contacted EA for comment.
