Kojima: Like Tom Cruise, I'll Create Until I Die

The visionary behind Metal Gear and Death Stranding, Hideo Kojima, recently shared a sentiment with Tom Cruise regarding his career, stating: "I aim to create until the day I die."

Since beginning his journey in the industry at Konami in 1986, Kojima has crafted a diverse portfolio of games, including Snatcher, the innovative sunlight-powered Boktai for the GBA, and the infamous P.T. demo. In a recent Game*Spark interview focusing on Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Kojima was asked about his enduring drive to develop games.

"I'm like Tom Cruise," he remarked with a laugh. "My life's purpose has been creation. That is my passion. I plan to create as long as my mind and body allow. I would only reconsider if it became a burden to those around me, but my desire is to keep making things until the end."

By drawing a parallel to Cruise, Kojima is likely referencing the actor's recent statements at the Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning premiere. On the red carpet, Cruise told The Hollywood Reporter he has no intention of stopping filmmaking, even joking about continuing into his hundreds.

Speaking of films, Kojima's comments to Game*Spark didn't limit his creative ambitions to games alone, simply emphasizing creation. This openness suggests he might venture into non-gaming projects in the future. In a video interview with French outlet Brut, Kojima shared that, depending on Kojima Productions' status after completing Microsoft's OD and Sony's Physint, he would be interested in directing a movie.

Given their lengthy cutscenes and cinematic style, some argue that many of Kojima's games are already film-like. However, in his Game*Spark interview, Kojima clarifies that while movies influence his work, his primary focus is always on crafting a game experience.

"Having grown up with cinema, it inevitably shapes elements like lighting, character design, and direction when I develop a game," he explained. "But I'm always mindful that I'm not making a movie. My core principle is to explore what's uniquely possible in gaming, including a playful, unconventional spirit."

This playful spirit shines through in the unexpected cameos and bizarre Easter eggs scattered throughout his games. For examples, explore our list of Death Stranding 2 Easter Eggs, cheats, and secrets discovered so far, or learn about the quirky actions Sam can perform in the hot springs.

Of course, Kojima is already connected to a film project: a Death Stranding adaptation, which Norman Reedus has expressed eagerness to star in.
