Donkey Kong Bananza Origins Revealed: Inside Nintendo"s Surprising Development Choices

The Unexpected Genesis of Donkey Kong Bananza

The gaming community erupted with theories when Donkey Kong Bananza was first announced, with many assuming the Super Mario Odyssey team was behind it. While that part proved accurate, persistent rumors about the project beginning as Odyssey DLC have finally been debunked.

In an exclusive IGN interview, producer Kenta Motokura – who previously directed Super Mario Odyssey – revealed Bananza's conceptual roots weren't connected to Mario's adventures at all. Instead, Nintendo executive Yoshaki Koizumi directly commissioned the Odyssey team to envision a new 3D Donkey Kong experience.

Tapping Into DK's Legacy

"We hadn't developed a Donkey Kong title internally since Jungle Beat twenty years ago," Motokura reflected when pressed about Nintendo's sudden interest in reviving the ape. "With so many iconic characters, timing is everything when deciding who gets a new game."

The team immediately consulted Donkey Kong creator Shigeru Miyamoto, who emphasized the character's brute strength through signature moves like ground pounds and hurricane breaths. Koizumi – drawing from his Jungle Beat directing experience – also highlighted DK's uniquely proportioned limbs as key differentiators from Mario.

A Technological Breakthrough

Meanwhile, an Odyssey programmer's voxel experiments – the same tech that powered Luncheon Kingdom's cheese-melting mechanics – were evolving into something more ambitious. They discovered ways to let players not just interact with, but radically reshape voxel-based environments.

"We had this lightbulb moment," Motokura recalled. "Donkey Kong's raw power and those extendable arms paired perfectly with destructible voxel environments." This marriage of character and technology birthed Bananza's core destruction gameplay.
