Former Mass Effect Devs Dissatisfied with their “Nightingale” Fantasy Game

Nightingale Will Receive Major Update this Summer

Nightingale, crafted by Inflexion Games and led by ex-Bioware head Aaryn Flynn, is gearing up for a transformative update. Flynn, alongside art and audio director Neil Thomson, recently took to YouTube to discuss the game's current standing and their roadmap to enhance Nightingale. The duo openly acknowledged their dissatisfaction with the game's current state, player numbers, and overall reception. They've announced a significant update slated for the end of summer, aimed at rectifying the game's flaws.

"We are not satisfied with where the game is at, we're not satisfied with the overall sentiment, we're not satisfied with our player numbers," Flynn admitted. Since the early access launch in February, Inflexion Games has been diligently working on quality of life (QoL) enhancements and bug fixes. Responding to community demands, they've also introduced an offline mode. Now, the focus is on aligning the game more closely with their initial vision and addressing its shortcomings.

Nightingale invites players to explore the mysterious and perilous Fae Realms in an open-world setting. While open-world games are known for their extensive content and non-linear gameplay, Thomson pointed out that Nightingale might be "almost too open world, too self-motivated in terms of goal-setting." To address this, Inflexion Games is planning to introduce "more structure" to the game, including clearer progression indicators, defined objectives, and revamped realm designs to combat the repetitive feel players have experienced.

"We do love the game very much, but we do think there's a lot of room to improve it," Flynn explained. "One big way that we want to improve it is to bring more structure to the overall experience. What I mean by that is more sense of you as a player progressing; a better understanding of what you can do, a better understanding of the differences between these Realms." Additionally, the team is re-assessing core game elements and contemplating adjustments. The upcoming update will also feature higher build limits, allowing for larger and more intricate structures. Flynn hinted that previews of these enhancements will be available in the coming weeks.

Currently, Nightingale holds a 'Mixed' rating on Steam, though the percentage of positive reviews has been steadily climbing, with approximately 68% of recent reviews being positive. Flynn and Thomson expressed their gratitude for the player community's support and their openness to all forms of feedback. "We played this new version really recently, and there's still a bit more work to do, but I think it's elevated it quite a bit, but obviously you'll all be the judge of that when we bring this thing out," Flynn concluded.

Echoing the sentiments of both fans and developers, Game8 noted that Nightingale could benefit from clearer guidance and simplification of complex mechanics like crafting. For a deeper dive into our analysis, check out our comprehensive review of Nightingale by clicking the link below!
