Fantasy RPG Creators Reveal World-Building Secrets
An exclusive email interview with Pixel Tribe, the developers behind the upcoming Kakao Games title, Goddess Order, reveals insights into the creation of this pixel RPG. We spoke with Ilsun (Art Director) and Terron J. (Contents Director).
Pixel Tribe: Crafting Goddess Order
Droid Gamers: What inspires your pixel sprites?
Ilsun: As Art Director, I oversee Goddess Order's visuals. Building on the success of Crusaders Quest, we aim for console-quality pixel art with a strong narrative focus. Each character and background is meticulously pixelated. Inspiration comes from a wide range of games and stories, focusing on using pixels to express form and movement. It's less about specific references and more about the subtle impact of years of experience. Collaboration with the team is key; the initial characters, Lisbeth, Violet, and Jan, were born from solo work but blossomed through team discussions and feedback, shaping the overall art style. Ongoing dialogue with scenario writers and combat designers ensures character designs perfectly complement the game's story and mechanics.
Droid Gamers: How do you approach world-building?
Terron J.: As Contents Director, I can say Goddess Order's world sprang from its pixel characters. Lisbeth, Violet, and Jan formed the core, driving gameplay development. Their inherent characteristics – their actions, missions, and purpose – shaped the narrative. Writing their stories felt less like work and more like a unique creative journey, organically developing the game's world. The emphasis on manual controls reflects the characters' strength and agency within the scenario.
Droid Gamers: How do you design combat styles and animations?
Terron J.: Goddess Order's combat uses a three-character, turn-based system with link skills for synergy. Design involves brainstorming unique roles for each character, creating strategic formations. We consider whether characters should focus on powerful attacks, quicker attacks, or support roles. Linked skills are crucial, and we refine character designs to ensure optimal combat dynamics.
Ilsun: Visually, we emphasize impactful animations. Despite the 2D pixel art, characters move with three-dimensional fluidity. We use real-world weapons for motion studies, creating unique and visually compelling combat for each character.
Terron J.: Finally, technical optimization for mobile devices is paramount. We ensure smooth gameplay even on lower-spec devices without sacrificing cutscene immersion. The focus is on a seamless, hands-on experience.
Droid Gamers: What's next for Goddess Order?
Ilsun: Goddess Order blends JRPG storytelling with unique pixel art and combat. The story follows the Lisbeth Knights saving the world. Post-launch, we plan to add various activities like quests and treasure hunts, expanding upon both the main and character-specific narratives. We'll also introduce advanced content and refined controls to further challenge players.
